So when I saw this awesome tutorial on this knockoff PB growth chart, I was SO excited! It's adorable, easy, and crazy cheap! Cost me $10 - for real. Here's the original from PB Kids:
It's since been discontinued, but their vinyl decal growth charts are in the $130 range, so my guess for a wooden one, it'd be even higher;). Here's my version:
Here's how I did it. First, I picked up a 1x8x6 board from Lowe's, and some stain (I used Golden Oak).
Total cost: 10 big ones. I painted on two coats (let them dry in between coats), and brushed off the excess with a rag after each coat. Then it was time for the "ruler" part.
This is ALL you need. I pulled out the measuring tape, and lined it up starting the ruler at the 6 inch mark. Was that a confusing sentence? I apologize. Sometimes it's easier in my head than it is to write down;). Basically, I didn't want the chart starting at the floor, so I started it where it would be hung on the wall. See what I mean?
Then I just made markings with a pencil along the left side, with the measuring tape guiding me where to mark. I made the quarter inch lines longer, to make it look like a real ruler. Then, I used stencils I already had to make the numbers. I tried to find larger ones, but they all seemed too large, so I just decided to give these 1 1/2 inch ones a try. Worked pretty well.
Then it was time to just go over my markings with a paint marker. LOVE paint markers! It's like using a Sharpie - so simple!
It was a little tricky to hang (for one person at least! Guess I could have waited for Hubs to get home, but that was like HOURS away! Naptime Decorator has zero patience with things like this, I needed it hung and needed it hung right. that. minute;). I wanted to make sure it was perfectly accurate, so you know, this could actually be used as a growth chart. It only took two tries, surprisingly enough. I triple checked with the measuring tape to make sure it's correct, and I can assure you, it is.
What a great idea, especially for people who know they'll eventually move homes, and want something that has all those precious markings on it. I love the wall idea, but you can't exactly take a wall with you when you leave;) Plus, you might want to paint someday, and this way, you'll never have to ruin those memories when you do! Kinda genius! For a $10 Pottery Barn knockoff, AND pretty simple to do, I'll take it!

Liz, this is just the answer I've been looking for!! I have been wanting to do a growth chart in our playroom and this would be absolutely perfect! It is absolutely darling and I can't wait to get started on making my own. :-) Thank you so much for sharing it with us this week at Inspiration Friday!

Thanks so much, and you're so welcome! :)
I am so incredibly impressed. I saw you featured over at At The Picket Fence and had to stop by. I am decorating my 2 1/2 year old niece and nephews room and I think I am going to definitely try this. Really awesome. I am your latest follower. I would love for you to drop by and say hi and consider following me back. Thanks so much.
Thanks, Judy - just checked out your blog and I'm your newest follower! Love your stuff! Thanks again:)
This is an AWESOME idea! I wish I'd thought of something like this when my kids were little. I'm toying with an idea of making one to use as a shrinking chart for my husband and me. Really.
I'm your newest follower. Please stop by and say hi!
I bought a piece of wood to do this same thing months ago and still haven't completed it. Thanks for reminding me to get it done :)
I'm so glad that my tutorial was useful! :) Your ruler looks awesome!
This is just an adorable idea. I've already quickly pinned it because I have to share it with my hubby. This would be such a cute gift. Love what I've seen so far on your blog, so now I'm a new follower.

MJ, it was AMAZING!! I literally could not wait to make one - thank you thank you!! :) And thanks, everyone!
I was wondering if you really do write on the board your kids age/height? And what do you write with? a Sharpie? I LOVE this idea, even though I have 2 outta the nest, I would like to duplicate our "wall chart" onto a board. Thank you for sharing your creativity!
I do, I just use a black pen. A fine tip Sharpie would work great, I'm sure:). Thanks for your comments, and thanks for reading!
I honestly, think yours is much cuter than the PB one!! Love it!!!
love this!! I can't wait to make one. Thank you! How did you hang it, what did you use?
thank you both! Victoria, I just attached one of those giant teeth hanging things - it's not really that heavy at all, so that and a nail is all I used.
Just found this on Pinterest, brilliant knock off!! and for only $10! The only thing I'd change is to place the numbers NEXT to the foot-marker-lines as they would be on a real wooden ruler, not above them. Other than that, top notch!

I am so doing this. It looks big enough to do metric on the other edge, too. I'm a science geek, so would love having both.
I wonder if the little picture hanging strips (3M Command) would make hanging easier. If it's that light, I'll bet 3-4 of those strips would also work. I think I'll try that with mine.
You did a great job, nd your looks better then PB version....very talented!
What a great idea! Thank you for sharing. How did you hang it to the wall?
Jessica, thank you! I just attached one of those giant teeth hooks - works great!
Such a great and inexpensive idea! My three are grown and married or engaged now, but we still have their growth measurements in pencil on our wall(always intended to make a project like this but never did) and the boys still enjoy seeing when they first passed up their dad or whatever! I encourage every parent to make one!!
I really love this! You are so clever...
Where can I buy stencils like yours please?
Thanks!
Thanks, Joanna! I bought these stencils at Michaels.
I like your version even better than the PBK one!!! I can't wait to have kids now! :o)
Thank you, Liz! We are a military family that moves around a lot and this is just what I have been looking for! I have already bought the supplies and am ready to put on the first coat of stain. Yay! :)
Love this, I'm def going to do this. I have a 2 year old and a 8 month old so I will get a lot of use out of it. I love your creativity and you make it seem so simple that even me, someone who doesn't have a creative bone in my body can do this. Thank you!!
and I do think yours looks way better than the pb one and I LOVE everything at pb!!
Love it! I'm in the middle of making one right now and was wondering if you added a seal or anything after the 2 coats of stain. I'm new to staining so wasn't sure if I needed to and also wasn't sure if I did if I would be able to write the kids heights on there without it coming off or something!
Sarah, nope! Just the stain:)
Thanks :)
My friend told me about this site last night. I checked it out today. Pretty interesting ideas on here. I really love this ruler one. I am not very artistic although I love how it looks. I think I might actually try this one.
Love your growth chart -- it's really beautiful. The wonderful thing is that if you ever decide to move, you can take it with you! (Which is much better than leaving behind pencil growth marks on a wall.)
