A Time for Thanks

The craziness (although fun!) of Halloween has come and gone, and we're getting so close to Christmas I can almost smell it. This time of year...oh, I adore it! Which is why, usually come November 1st, I am de-Halloweening the house and busting out the Thanksgiving decor. It's really not a whole lot, since most of the fall decorations just stay around, but there are certain things that are strictly Novembery. Don't you love these words I'm throwing out here?! And to think I was once an educator in my former life;) And much thanks to Pinterest, there are even more ideas for me to use in our home for this wonderful month. I feel like I better get on these things, for this time is brief. Yes, I am one of those who literally wake up on the day after Thanksgiving, go grab the Christmas bins and spend the entire day Christmasizing our house. There's another word. Wonder if any of my former students are reading this blog?! If so, I'm way busted...

So I went to the Dollar Store the other day - by the way - run, do not walk to your nearest Dollar Store right now! The one here at least, was FILLED with gorgeous white plates, bowls, mugs, with a raised dotted pattern around the edges - they were lovely. And beautiful silver trays that I could picture lining the dining room table with candles and greens on them...if I were hosting a holiday dinner party, I would have seriously stocked UP. I promise you, you could spend probably $20 and have the most elegant, gorgeous table for the holidays with the stuff I saw there. In hindsight, I should have grabbed everything, but something else caught my eye and got sidetracked. Plus, we know how much you can really *shop* with little ones around, so I was kinda in and out;) I saw these glasses...
These are heavy, solid glasses. They just feel like they're worth so much more than a buck! So I grabbed six, since I had a vision...

You know I'm always on the hunt for something low for our mantel, since our tv is mounted above it, leaving me a few inches to play with. So I thought, maybe I could use my stencils (yes, AGAIN!), and write out the word t-h-a-n-k-s, and fill them with votives and itty bitty fillers, like tiny acorns/pinecones/cinnamon stick pieces, etc. I put the kids down for naps the other day and got to workin'.
I had no idea how this was gonna go, since I'd never taped a stencil around a round glass surface before, but my little foam brush worked perfectly. I used a cream color acrylic paint I already had in my stash, and I think for $6 it turned out pretty cute!
And just for fun, some daytime pics too;)...
I didn't have enough votives to fill all 6, so I just put some cinnamony-scented potpourri from Michaels in there for now. I also weaved some garland I had around the glasses, and threw some pinecones and pumpkins in the mix too. I know, I thought I had already done the Fall Mantel, but you know me. Can never leave well enough alone;).

Ah, Thanksgiving. So nice to give thanks, reflect on all our blessings...like our family, our health, our home, and of course, our Dollar Store...;)

Stay tuned for more Thanksgiving Decor this week!

I love this idea, thanks! I think I'm going to head to Ikea to see what cheap glasses I can find to start mine for next weekend. I might fill mine with cranberries too, not sure I love cranberries this time of year. Thanks again!

Hi ! I just discovered this blog and am so excited -- I love it.

CAn you please tell me where I can get the stencils you use in the same font?
Also -- did you make or buy the sign featured on your page that says "In our home we thank...etc..."? I would love to get/make one for our family! Thank you.

Thank you, Joanna! I use these stencils on EVERYTHING around here;) I bought them at Hobby Lobby - they are called 4 inch Rustic Alphabet Letters. You can find them online if you don't have a Hobby Lobby near you. They are AWESOME stencils. And the "In our home..." sign is one I made - it's a large canvas, with fabric tightly stapled around it, and those same stencils with just some acrylic paint. I did a blog post about it with all the details - the post is titled "Family Quote Art." Good luck and thanks again!

Hi! What type of tape did you use? Stencil tape or making tape?

Mary Padilla said...

I made, these happy with the way they turned out.

Did you peel off the stencil after you painted it?

Liz said...

It wasn't stuck on there, I taped the plastic stencil, and just removed the tape and it comes off.

What could you write for Christmas?

These would be cute with candy corn, cranberries, potpourri etc. then put a battery operated tea light in the glass.

What is the name of the font of your stencils? Really cute!

I just tried making these but the paint was running underneath my stencil. Am I doing something wrong? I taped them around the exact same glass jar as you did and am using acrylic paint and foam brush...I ended up free handing it. Not as cool looking:(

I tried it also and had the same problem with the paint going under the stencil (even after spraying with stencil spray, which wouldn't stick to glass). Was so disappointed, because I love them! Still trying to figure out how to do it. I didn't like my free hand either.

The key is to only dab a tiny bit of paint on the foam brush - a little will seep out, but since it's glass, you can wipe it right off. It might be easier to do that part after if dries - you can sorta just chip it off with your fingernail;)
And the stencils are "4 inch Rustic Lower Case Alphabet Letters" from Hobby Lobby. Thanks everyone!

LOVE this idea! I'm going to make the "thanks" glasses for Thanksgiving, and "believe" for Christmas!

Did you use 1 or 2 coats of paint?

Jamie Bakies said...

I have tried and tried!! Not working! Don't know what I'm doing wrong. Used tape at first, then stencil spray, seeping everywhere and really streaky. I got the exact stencils and paint. Then I tried a different paint. I am determined to do it! It's so cute and such a great idea! Want to do Christmas ones too! I am doing these so late bc I am decorating my brothers house bc we are having Thanksgiving there. Any tips?? Did you do several coats? It almost looks like you stayed inside the stencil not getting close to the lines? How larger was your foam brush? Did you brush or dab? I know this sounds crazy but your naptime project I have already spent hours on and determined to finish! Lol

Jamie, just use a smallish foam brush (you can see mine in the back of the pic with the taped stencil). Dab EVER so slightly with the paint. You hardly need any. If some gets elsewhere, no worries - it's glass, it'll wipe right off! You can either do it when it's still wet, or wait till it dries and just chip it off with your fingernail!
