Top Ten...of the Past 6 of 12.

Strange title, yes? I thought I'd recap the lovely year that was 2011 in a Top 10 of your favorite Naptime Decorator posts. But then I realized, I've only been doing this bloggin' thing since June. So it's more of a top ten of the past 6 months, make sense now? ;) Starting with Number 10...here we go!

10. Girls Night #2 - Berry Letters
Not sure what you liked more: the idea of getting the girls together and doing a little craftin' (and eating...and drinking...;), or the actual Berry Letter, but this post was a popular one. I have to say, the Girls Craft Night is SO much fun, and I'm so glad a couple of my girlfriends suggested it. Major props, Amy and Mary Pat!

9. t-h-a-n-k-s Letters
Got a lot of feedback on this one - I was really happy with these little guys too. Glasses from the Dollar Store with a little paint - so simple, and they were perfect for my height-challenged mantel!

8. The Story of the Three Stools
I've learned that it's often the non-decorating posts that are favorites with you guys! I tend to get a little mushy on you all from time to time, and I'm glad that (I'm assuming!), you don't mind;)

7. Babies Don't Keep
Again, one of the most popular posts, that had nothing to do with decorating! I had a friend tell me she was having a really rough day and needed to read something like this the very day I posted it, and that is the kind of stuff that inspires me to write this blog. Whether it be a decorating idea, or a sentimental want-to-freeze-time post, or a way to help you get organized, when I hear from one of you that it's helped you in one form or another...you have no idea how that makes my day week month. So I thank you, from the very bottom of my heart.

6. DIY Desk
Who doesn't love a free desk?! My daughter is up in her room working there as I type this (it's naptime in this house, of course! But the kindergartener is off for winter vacation and has her 'quiet time' while the other 2 sleep).  It was a big hit with her, as it was with you, from what I gather on Pinterest;) SO much fun to see little ol' Naptime Decorator getting pinned! Doesn't take much....lol.

5. Getting Organized...
Organization and thriftiness are always a good combo, so this fit the bill! Using coffee cans and waffle boxes, I was able to organize the kids' craft table.

4. Book Nook Update
Oh IKEA spice racks...I love you so. I LOVE this little section of our playroom - and it cost SO VERY LITTLE! Used old book covers and framed them with a combination of dollar store and yard sale frames, and covered with a little spray paint. Picked up some letters from JoAnn's and the $4 spice racks and it was complete. Just goes to show you really do NOT have to spend a lot on decor!

3. Ruler Growth Chart
Pottery Barn and $10 rarely go together, right?! They did in this post! I made a knockoff PB ruler growth chart and the ND readers appreciated the savings! Since I now have the stain, if I were to make this again (which I plan on doing in a couple months as a gift when one of my best friends has her FIFTH child! ;), it will cost me a whopping $7. Rock on.

2. Budget Bathroom Makeover
This was definitely the post that got the Naptime Decorator on the map. This was the first one that other bloggers shared on their blogs (SO exciting when that happens!!), and it also received the most comments from you. Thought you might like to know that the painted tile floor is holding up perfectly. It stands up to cleaners just fine (in case there are any of you out there fortunate enough to have a gold/yellow tile floor like we were;). I still get happy when I go in there, thinking how different it looks and I spent a whopping $72.

1. Family Handprint Tree
Holy moly I did not see this one coming!! Since I posted this in November, this post alone has had almost 60,000 pageviews. Wha??! That may not be a big number for the big time bloggers out there, but for someone like me, I'm shocked! I had a reader comment that she and her family did this right before her husband got deployed, and that it was a great memory they made as a family. And I have heard that readers made these at Christmas and Thanksgiving with their ENTIRE families, since everyone was in town and together. Again, that's the stuff that makes me want to blog for the rest of my life. If I contribute even in the slightest bit to people and families coming together, creating lifelong happy memories, are you kidding me? What more could a person ask for?

So there's the Top Ten of the past 6 of 12. Was your favorite on here? If not, I'd love to hear what it was! I love and appreciate every single comment from you. I am SO grateful you've welcomed me into your life this year, and I hope that I can inspire you in 2012. I don't know about you, but I'm excited!

Thank you again,

Liz

A Winter Prayer

There has been very little decorating going on in the ND's home these days (whaaaa???!). I know, crazy, right?! But The Most Wonderful Time of the Year is going on right now, and I have been a little lot busy. The wheels are a-spinnin' though, so come January, I hope to have some goodies to share with you! But in the meantime, I have been making (many) lists and checking them (more than) twice. I have been baking. And baking. Oh, and some more baking. I have been trying to make this beautiful time of year special for my little ones, taking them to fun events, doing Christmas crafts and all that jazz. It's been a GREAT month. In the chaos of it all, I feel very blessed that I have been able to find time to just be this year. I have been taking it all in, perhaps more than ever before, and appreciating this crazy, yet pretty great life I've got. To be thankful for moments while they're happening...I consider that a huge gift.

While I wish I was able to appreciate my many blessings all year long, I shamefully admit, I don't. I mean, I'm aware of them, but it's not so in-my-face (in a good way) as it is from the months of November through January. And my kids...oh my kids. They can drive me crazy. They can make me look forward to my evening glass of wine like nobody can. They can cause me to yell, and want to pull out every last strand of hair on my head. They can create more laundry and messes than I thought 3 small people ever could. But oh my kids. They can bring a smile to my face faster than anyone. They can brighten ANY day. They can make a sleepless night so worth it. They can make me appreciate little things. And these days, they are just so stinkin' adorably filled with anticipation/excitement/innocence and sweetness I can't stand it. And these days, more than ever, I thank God so very much they are mine. (Oh, and for that guy who helped me make them - I also thank God for him - he's pretty awesome too;)

They say it's not happy people who are thankful; it's thankful people who are happy. Makes sense to me. I'm happiest when I'm the most thankful, and when I read this winter prayer in a magazine the other day, I ripped it out and saved it, with the hope I would refer to it often. I'd like to share it with you:

"For All Warm Things" by Marjorie Holmes

For all warm things of this season I thank you, Lord.

For the warmth of my kitchen as I turn on the oven and sift and measure and stir and bake. For the snug warmth of the bedrooms where (finally, after much commotion) my children sleep.

For the warmth of this cup of steaming coffee in my hand as I settle down (exhausted, and at last) before the fire that dances so warm and festive on the grate.

And for warm clothes, Lord. These slippers, this robe - all the untidy closets bursting. That car coat tossed across a chair. And the car itself; a warm car to take us places (once we get it started). And those warm places: the homes of neighbors, friends, a warm church to worship in.

And the warm people there. The warm smiles and greetings. The generosity and kindness of people everywhere.

I am full of this warmth, Lord. It comforts me, it calms me. It makes me feel a glow almost as rosy as the embers in the fireplace. I want all people to be warm and rested and at peace.

Thank you for this blessed season of warmth in the midst of so much that is chill and stormy. Let it draw all of us together against the coming cold.

I just love this. I thought of all we have to be thankful for, no matter how dreary or cold it is, or how much we complain about that messy closet, or the kids who won't fall asleep. There is always something to be thankful for, and often it's those little things that are the best ones.

I hope this season finds you warm. Finds you rested. Finds you with love and at peace. And finds you on the coldest, stormiest day, with something to be thankful for.

Meal Planning Tips

An idea popped into my head the other night, after we finished dinner. It happened to be one of those INSANELY simple dinners - I'm talking THREE - yes THREE ingredients, and was a hit with the whole gang. I thought to myself 2 things: 1. Why is it that it's always the crazy easy dinners that I pretty much do nothing towards that the family loves (that and when we have breakfast for dinner?!) And when I slave on a meal for hours, no one can tell?! And 2. I bet there are a lot of busy moms who read Naptime Decorator that would appreciate a crazy easy, yet yummy and healthy meal for their family - maybe I should share this on my blog? But then I thought, nah. Who am I to talk recipes, they probably read because they like decorating. Besides, it's not like I'm the expert on cooking or anything.

So I dropped the idea. Then not two days later, a friend emails me. Hey Liz, I don't know if you're looking for ideas for posts, but I'd love to see you talk about meal planning, menu ideas, shopping lists, etc. You seem to be really organized with all that! I, on the other hand, have a habit of standing in front of my freezer nightly and trying to figure out what to serve the next day! More posts on organization, please!

It's like she read my flippin' mind! Now, I'm not changing the premise of this blog or anything, but we all know I like to dabble a bit in other topics, like when I'm feeling particularly sentimental about my big girl starting Kindergarten, or my sweet baby boy turning 2, or the fact that I need to slow down and enjoy this crazy life. So this is still 99% a decorating blog, peeps, but I thought I'd listen to my friend and give her what she wants...and hopefully you can use some of these tips too! Even if you aren't a parent, you might find something useful here, because the system I use, I began using waaaayyy before the babies arrived. I'd say when I first moved out on my own, and I got tired of 5pm rolling around and not having a clue what to make for dinner, and having to frequent the grocery store about 4 or 5 times a week in order to whip something up.

I can't seem to figure out how to organize our office, keep my desk free from stuff, and there are more junk drawers in this house that I'd like to admit, but meals...that I've got under control. My family has teased me for years about my methods, because if you ask me on Sunday, what's for dinner on Thursday, I can tell you. They think I'm some freak that has to have everything organized (HA!), believe me, although I long for everything around here to be organized, that's not the case. The real reason I'm organized in this ONE area of our lives, is simply out of necessity - or sanity - or both. Because I know if I didn't plan ahead, I would 1. despise the Bewitching Hour even more (parents, you know what I'm referring to, don't you?) and 2. Throw bowls of cereal or mac and cheese in my kids faces every. single. night. You see, a little bit of planning ahead on your part, and you don't have to think at all when that lovely 5pm hour sneaks upon you. Let me share these simple tips that will keep you from searching your freezer wondering what to make night after night...

1. Have a day picked out that you do your grocery shopping. For some reason, I always go on Fridays. No idea why or when this habit formed, but it's just the day I always do it. Makes it easy, and I know that I need everything for that upcoming week, until the following Friday.

2. I check our calendar for any nightly events we might have that week. This will determine whether or not you'll need something super fast, or if there's a Girls Night Out for Mommy (rare, but YIPPEE when it happens!), I'll know to have something made ahead that night, so my husband just has to heat it up for him and the kids.

3. Now that I know what the week ahead looks like, I grab paper, pen, and my trusty Recipe Binder.
I started this bad boy a LOOONG time ago, and every time I see a recipe in a magazine, or online, or on a tv show, I print it out and stick it in here (in one of those page protector thingys).
I have it divided into sections - from appetizers to brunch to slow cooker ones to desserts. There's every section you can think of. Wow, I'm sounding even more anal that I thought I would, but I SWEAR I'm not! ;) It just makes it easier when I have to look up a particular recipe, I know just where to find it.

I also have a stash of favorite cookbooks that I'll grab and browse through as well. Here is one of my ABSOLUTE favorites.

I have made nearly every one of these recipes in here (something I can't say for any other cookbook I own!), and there is not one thing we haven't enjoyed. And it's all relatively easy stuff, that anyone can make. I am no Julia Childs, let me tell you, but this stuff I can do;)

4. Go through your books, and pick what you'll make for dinner on S-S-M-T-W. Don't have to worry about Th and F because:
 - Thursday nights are always leftovers. And if we don't happen to have any that week (which is rare), I'll fall back on everyone's fave: Breakfast for dinner! Who doesn't always have eggs and pancake mix in their house, right?! I know, leftovers aren't always that exciting, but get a little creative. If I made spaghetti and meatballs, I'll pick up hoagie rolls and mozzarella and make meatball subs. Or Parmesan Chicken can be chopped up and made into a salad.
- Friday nights are always Pizza. It's fun - the kids always look forward to it, and love to help make it! I use Bobolis and they help me top it with fun stuff. Grating fresh mozzarella is their favorite! It's nice to have 2 nights where I don't have to think of anything new.

Sunday is usually the day I save for a time-consuming/lots-of-steps/from-scratch kind of meal. I actually do really love to cook, but during the week it feels more like a chore, so I look forward to this day. The hubs keeps the kids entertained, while I can chop and stir away (with a glass of wine in hand, of course!;)) and
it just feels good, knowing I'm cooking a hearty, home-cooked meal for my family. My parents, and some of my brothers and sisters usually come by, so I make enough to feed a crowd. I grew up with Sunday Dinners being a big thing, and I hope my kids grow up with that sense of family gathering together like we always did. And at least I have one day that's set aside to enjoy the art of cooking, rather than dread it!

Another tip I have is to look for items that can do double duty and use shortcuts when you can. For example, a rotisserie chicken can be your best friend. Last week I cut up half of it and used it to make BBQ chicken sandwiches with sweet potato fries (sometimes I make my own, but Alexia brand are AMAZING!), and a couple nights later, I used the other half of the chicken, chopped it up, mixed it with some pesto and a box of penne noodles. (That's the 3-ingredient wonder I was telling you about). Both of those dinners were so simple, and easy on the budget too since I used one chicken for both meals! (*side note on the penne with pesto: a little bit of pasta cooking water thrown in there is good too! Most of the time I forget, but it does keep it from getting dry.)

When I've figured out the entire week, I write it all down on my Chalkboard Menu (which is just some chalkboard paint on the wall, framed with mitered molding).
I make sure to write the ingredients down that I'll need on the grocery store list. With 3 little ones, one trip to the grocery store per week is enough! Then I write down everything else we need, and rewrite it - oh yes, I get even more ridiculous: the reason I rewrite it is so I can categorize my food items into sections of the store, as I move along. Start with the produce, and work our way back to frozen. I know our grocery store like the back of my hand by now, so I know where everything is. Again, this isn't out of sheer obnoxiousness to be organized; it's because I always shop with at least 2 kids, so I need to MOVE people! The clock is always ticking with little ones, so I get in and out as quickly as possible, and having the list in order keeps me from getting all the way to the end of the store and realizing I forgot something at the front. Try wheeling 2 kids and $200 worth of groceries up and down a store once, and you'll make a point to be more organized the next time. Promise;)

So this is how I plan our meals. Probably mirrors what a lot of you do already, but if not, I hope you got some tips that will help you keep your sanity when asked, "What's for dinner?" You can just look up at the menu, and tell them! If I'm feeling REALLY ambitious, I'll get a head start at naptime (if I'm not decorating, of course!). I'll do some chopping, or if it's a casserole I can make ahead, I'll do it and just have to pop it in the oven. But since I've started this blog, I don't do that nearly as often;)

And just in case you've gotten the false impression that I'm some 100% put-together Supermom, I will tell you that you would be 100% wrong. There are days we eat this dinner I've planned in jammies from the night before, and haven't brushed my hair or teeth or put deodorant on for the day. Feel better? ;) Oh, and that drawer that sits below the chalkboard menu in that picture?
Yep. There she is. Told ya;)

Christmas Countdown

Whew...getting close now, huh?! I'm still drowning in to-do lists, baking an unnatural amount of cookies, all the while, trying to save time to reflect upon the REAL reason for this holiday, and teach my children that it's NOT all about Santa and gifts, Rudolph and Frosty. And so I present to you, a Santa Countdown. ??? My kids are well aware of the Baby Jesus' birthday, the manger, the three wise men - I've got the armless angel and one handed shepherd, wise man, and Mary underneath our tree to prove it. But let's face it, Santa is a pretty big part of Christmas too. Before another day passed by, I wanted to share a quick project we do in our house every year to count down to Christmas Day. I've made this cotton ball bearded Santa since my elementary school days, but this year, I found this cute poem on Pinterest to go along with it! I love it!
I was going to print the poem out in a cute font, and glue it to some pretty paper, etc etc...but then I thought, DUH! I'll just write it on my chalkboard fridge! (In case you missed my tutorial on my chalkboard fridge, you can read about it here.) Worked like a charm, and so quick! (I ended up changing a few words from the Pinterest version, for those observant people who picked up on that!;). To make the Santa, I just took a piece of poster board and drew a Santa (best I could do - lucky for me, my kids aren't too critical of my artistic (in)ability! ;) I glued red construction paper on for the hat.

The kids have been having a lot of fun taking turns gluing each cotton ball on. Such anticipation and excitement in their little faces. What's better than a kid at Christmastime? NOTHING!

Girls Craft Night #2...Berry Letters

Last night, the girls came over for our 2nd Girls Craft Night. SO much fun - if you have a group of friends close by, who all love to craft, I highly recommend getting together and doing this. It's so nice to just hang out with some good friends, catch up, and leave with something pretty for your home. Oh, and did I mention the wine and yummy food? Yep, not only are these ladies crafty, they come bearing delicious food and wine! And thanks to Pinterest, you're NEVER at a loss of things to make. This month's project was a berry letter, inspired by this beauty I saw on Pinterest from Our Unexpected Journey.

Sounded so simple, would only cost about $10 (or less), and most importantly, involved very little concentration! Perfect for us chatty gals - we just hot glued away, and that was all the thinking we needed to do;)

We each picked up our own letters - those $3.99 MDF black letters at Michaels, or the smaller white ones - whichever we wanted.
I decided to spray mine red, just in case you would see underneath the berries - in hindsight, this is not necessary. The others turned out looking exactly the same. We had an assortment of berries to choose from - some of us picked up garland, and just snipped and glued pieces of that onto the letter, and some of us picked up these canisters for $5.99 of loose ones:
Even after filling the entire letter, you're still left with a little less than half of this guy.

Then, that's pretty much it! Just plug in those glue guns and get to work!
Ta-da!
I love how they turned out! I decided to attach some ribbon I had to mine, and hang it over a mirror:
Maybe I'll add a sprig or two of greens to hang over the top, to make it even more festive;) Or these would look great sitting on a shelf too - lots of possibilities!

Some of my friends also bought extra letters, so they can make Christmas gifts for people - how special, how pretty, and how inexpensive, right?! Thanks so much to Adrienne at Our Unexpected Journey, for the awesome idea! By the way - it's a fabulous blog, suggest you check it out, you won't be sorry!

Cinnamon Stick Wreath

If you read my post about our Girls Craft Night last month, you saw we made cinnamon stick wreaths. I didn't go into too much detail about how we made these, so I thought I'd give you a little more info, in case you wanted to make one for your home - or it makes a nice Christmas gift for someone else as well! And doesn't cost much either. All you need are 3 things: cinnamon sticks, a wreath form, and a glue gun. Easy peasy. One of my friends found a farm online (Countryside Herb Farms) that ships these cinnamon sticks in bulk, and that was by far the cheapest option we found. If you buy these at Michaels, they're $4.99 for 9 oz, but at Countryside Farms, you can purchase bags by the pound for $2.99. We used the 6 inch sticks, and you'll need between 3 and 4 lbs, depending on how full you want yours.
You can pick up the flat wooden 12 inch wreath forms at Michaels as well - a whopping $1.99. And if you use the 40% off coupon they always hand out, well geez! Might as well be free! ;)

Pretty self-explanatory at this point, huh? You go around hot gluing away - placing those sticks here, there, and everywhere. You can make yours nice and even all the way around, or place some higher/lower than others, to give it a more uneven look, like I did. (I actually originally did the nice and even method, and later picked up a small bag from Michaels to add some up and down throughout - I think it looks more rustic...or rugged...or something?!)
I used some wire to attach the bow, and then tucked some sprigs of green leftover from our Christmas tree in there as well. Hung it from a piece of burlap I had, and now my kitchen window displays this cute little guy...and makes the house smell pretty yummy too!

I'm hosting our second Girl's Craft Night tomorrow - stay tuned to see what we're making! Thinking I'm gonna love it! ;)

Easy and Quick Festive Touches

I know, yet ANOTHER post about holiday decorating...sorry, but this time of year 100% consumes me. Always has, always will. Every day I'm adding some more touches, all the while, the dust is piling up (and the laundry as well), and the none of the lists are getting checked off. But it'll all get done, as it always does. Not sure how, but it will;) So instead of throwing another load in the washing machine, I took some pics and wanted to share some super fast, super inexpensive, and super easy ways to add some festive touches to your home. Because, you, fine reader, are more important to me than dusting:)

While out and about running our errands yesterday, I spotted some cute Christmas throw pillows. Year after year I've wanted to grab some, but it's one of those things that fall into that not expensive by themselves category, but when you want to pick up 5 or 6 of them, on TOP of your average Target trip list, and on TOP of it being Christmastime, when you're already forking out cash like it's growing on trees, I can never seem to justify it. But I went ahead and picked up a few and thought I'd try and "make" a couple - if you've been reading ND for a while, you know sewing and I do NOT go hand-in-hand. I will iron on hem tape with the best of them, but get me around a needle and thread and I start to sweat. (*this is my New Year's Resolution by the way. I'll be busting out pillows and curtains - all kinds of goodies next year at this time, just you wait and see...uh, that's the plan anyway;)...

Here are the cuties I picked up - the one on the left is from Target, and the cardinal one's from Kohls:
I also picked up a second red snowflake one. Now let me explain how I "made" my other 2 pillows. I have a couple extra pillows in my laundry room, just waiting for me to learn how to sew, so I can transform them. One is red. Plain red. I hated it as soon as I bought it - it was a twofer deal. One of those 2 pillows tied together with a pretty bow for something like $15 or $20. And I was in that wanting to fill space place when we moved in, so I grabbed them. They lasted on the couch for a few months before I stashed them away. One of them turned into my blessed pillow that I made a while back (you can see the post here).
And it dawned on me to take my used-to-death stencils and turn this:
Into this:
I just used my white acrylic paint and a foam brush, then went over it with a paint brush to make it darker. In hindsight, I should have used fabric paint, but I have next to zero patience when I get an idea in my head, and needed it done yesterday;). It looks fine though, a little stiff, but heck, it's only out for a few weeks out of the year, right? Plus, you can just flip it over it you want to lay your head on it!

Check out that pillow in the middle there. Now THIS is a pretty hilarious story. Keep in mind, this is a temporary solution, and again, I went in with the knowledge that we would be using these for just a few weeks out of the year. I took the other old pillow we had in storage, and some leftover cream colored fabric I had. I literally wrapped this pillow like a present, and sprayed tack upholstery spray to hold it together!!!! Hold your laughter to yourselves, my sewing expert friends, I know the ridiculousness of this all, but I kid you not, this worked like a flippin' CHARM!!
Then I wrapped some beautiful wide ribbon I picked up last week at Michaels (for 50% off - woohoo!). I cut 2 pieces - and secured both in the back, again with the fabric spray. Here's what it looks like from the back.
Not TOO bad, considering, right?? I was able to at least hide one of the seams with the ribbon. Here it is from the front:
And this stuff is STICKING people! I'm sure it won't last too long, but I'm hoping at least for the next few weeks it'll hold up. What's the worst that could happen though, right?! I didn't pay a single penny (other than the ribbon, but I had already bought that for another project), AND I have two additional pillows for Christmas! Now, if you don't want to spray stuff on your pretty pillows, take with you this idea: wrap some beautiful ribbon around it, maybe secure it in the back with a safety pin, and you've got yourself a decked out pillow for next to nothing. It's just a little something that adds a festive touch, you know? Simple and quick, and it really adds a lot of coziness to the room.
Don't forget to bust out your throw blankets! I'm a big fan, and they don't have to be neat - the messier, the cozier! At least that's what I say, when my kids all HAVE to jump around on the couch the second I neaten them up;)

Here's another quick tip. Swap Christmas paper anywhere you can. Takes seconds and pennies to do - check out my old tray. You may have read the post about my $2 yard sale tray (if you missed it, you can read about it here). It went from this:
to this:
after just some gold spray paint and a piece of scrapbook paper. Well, I simply swapped that paper out for some Christmas wrapping paper that I had, and got this:
I love that it even has gold in the plaid! So again, FREE transformation, and just adds some more holiday feel to the family room.

This time of year, the Dollar Store is your best friend. Grab a glass bowl, some ornaments, and you're set.
You really don't have to break the bank to make your home feel like the holidays, I firmly believe that!

I've got one more to leave with you, and then I MUST get to that to-do list before the kiddies wake up...
This little guy is just a plate with a glass topper that my mom found in her storage and gave to me. I filled it with some fake snow, and some little accessories from our Train Garden (shhh...don't tell my husband!! :), and tied a bow around it. The kids are so cute checking this out. It's just at their height on the table in our family room, and they think it's so fun to stare inside at the little Frosty. If you don't have a glass cover, you could probably head on over to the Dollar Store near you and find a glass bowl that would do the trick! While you're there, pick up a small white plate for the base, and you've got yourself a little cloche!
Ok, that about wraps it up for now. Hope this gives you some ideas on how to decorate your home for the holidays...in a quick and inexpensive way! We can all use some more quick and inexpensive in our lives these days, right? ;) Happy holidays!
