I knew these would be a great craft night project, because it's crazy inexpensive, and relatively quick and easy = more time for chattin', drinkin', and stuffin' our faces;) Always an important factor for Girls Night.
They turned out so cute!
You will only need a few things:
1. a letter
2. moss sheets
3. glue gun (and sticks)
4. scissors
Here's how we did it:
We all bought a pack of these all-purpose moss sheets (can be found at Hob Lob or Michaels).
These are $6.99 a pack, but of course there's ALWAYS a coupon for at least 40% off. This was literally my only expense for this project. Not bad!
For the letter, I just used some foam board I had leftover from a project, and used the edge of my scissors to cut through (couldn't find that darn exacto knife!). At first I tried winging my W, but wasn't thrilled with the outcome...
I'm sure it would have looked better all covered in mossy goodness, but wasn't the look I wanted. So literally 5 minutes before the girls arrived, I was sitting in my family room and DUH! I grabbed the W hanging on our gallery wall, and traced that bad boy!
Now that's more what I envisioned. Perfect!
You can also use plain ol' cardboard - that's what I was planning on using, and some of the girls used it - but I didn't have any - whaaa?! Who doesn't have cardboard laying around?? Guess I tossed it all in the recycling bin last week. And some of the girls also just picked up some of those inexpensive unfinished/paper mache type letters from any craft store, and used those.
Then just flip your letter over, and cut the moss so that it goes over to the back. I ended up covering the back also, because I didn't know if I might ever end up hanging it over a mirror, and in that case, I'd want the back covered.
There's no science to this - we just cut and glued, cut and glued. Doesn't have to be perfect, since you can always stick a random piece of moss to cover up a bare spot (I did this plenty of times, and you can't tell at all:).
Then when you're done (which we all were pretty quickly with this project!), just bask in your moss-y mess and beautiful letter, and hang with the girls, drink and eat up!
| YUM! |
We decided Shannon won the award for cutest letter - she picked up some butterflies and glued them on - how cute is that?!
I love that!
For the moment, I have mine on a shelf in the dining room, with some other Springy accessories...
Last year, I picked up those moss bunnies at Michaels - how perfect?! I also filled a mason jar with some moss and fake eggs too, and that birdie was a clearance pick up last year - I think I paid a dollar or two for it!
OH! Are you ready for the best part? I've seen these at Pottery Barn before, but didn't know the exact price...I looked it up, and for the same letter that I paid less than $5 to make, I would have had to spend $79 at PB!
WOOHOO! Who doesn't love a Pottery Barn knockoff?!

Thank you!!
How pretty! I've been planning on making one of these too! A friend of mine told me about your blog, and thought I should take a look...I'm now a follower ;-) come by and say hi sometime (I also have a $50 Home Depot gift card giveaway going on now through 3-21) www.firsthomelovelife.blogspot.com
How big is your letter? I bought some foam board because I couldn't find a pre-made letter that I liked, but I don't want to just wing it. I thought I could print one out and trace it, but I'm thinking that might not be big enough...
Thank you! New follower of yours now too:)
I made mine 14 inches tall. Good luck!
