A Sign from a Sign

One of the benefits of being a little cuckoo for constantly changing things up around here is that I'm always getting to repurpose old items. A little spray paint here, some sisal rope there...I love a good upcycle, and of course, saving some money's never a bad thing, right? Not good for the organizing freak inside me, I have to admit. When I walk into my craft area in the laundry room, and see the old vases, picture frames, dishes, pitchers...it's all I have not to grab a trash bag and give it all away, but some things have too much potential, know what I mean? And there's always a project to be done, when you've got all these old goodies to choose from...which takes me to my latest quickie project...a gift I made for my country music/beach lovin' sister who happened to just have a birthday on Mother's Day...
For those of you who aren't into the country thing, this is a line in a Kenny Chesney song (who my sister has seen in concert several times). AND she is quite the wine-o (sorry, Kate - I mean it in the kindest way possible...;), AND her home has a coastal/beachy vibe going on. Perfect!! This metal sign is actually one that I had hanging up in my kitchen (back in the red days, if you have been a ND reader for a little while;)
Obviously, I can't use it in my new kitchen, but it's a decent sign, and perfect for a short quote, or word, or in this case, song lyrics. It just needed some white spray paint (a few good coats to hide that black), and some stencils.
I had the Martha Stewart Stencils and decorative tape from Michaels (of course!), and the perfect shade of blue leftover from the kitchen island, that I knew would match the tape exactly! Yesss! I played around for a minute, making sure the words would all fit, and then I grabbed my foam brush, crossed my fingers and started.
As luck would have it, it all fit on there (whew!), and at first I thought I'd skip the decorative tape...
Then I thought it needed a little somethin', and after asking my *expert* husband's opinion, we decided some of the tape would look good on there after all. The tape is a bit wide, but as you can see, I had limited space to work with on the sign. Of course, the geniuses who invented this stuff used a grid on the back, just like contact paper, so I could make a perfectly straight line without losing my marbles.
So I cut some skinny pieces off, peeled back the sticker and stuck her right on there.
(Shh...don't tell me sister, but this gift didn't cost me a dime! ;) I had the stencils and tape, and of course the sign!)

So next time you're tired of an old picture, or frame, or sign, think what a little paint can do first - you might just be able to make something brand new for yourself (and go spend the money you save on a little something for yourself - I won't tell;)
