HomeGoods Goodies

If you read my latest post, you know we just took a family vacation to Ocean City, Maryland. My parents came with us, which is always a lot of fun (and nice to have 2 extra sets of hands and built-in free babysitters, not gonna lie;). My mom and I are one and the same when it comes to decorating - we have very similar tastes, and have a ball shopping together. Mom's just as passionate as I am when it comes to home decorating (apple doesn't fall far from the tree, know what I mean?), so when she had heard from a friend about the huge HomeGoods in Rehoboth, Delaware, we knew we had to pop on in and see what it had to offer. It's not far from OC, so one morning while the kiddies, my husband, and father were having a leisurely breakfast, we hopped in the car and went for a little drive to one of our very favorite stores on the planet.
That's Mom's "are you really taking a picture of me right now??" look. Sorry, Mom, a blogger's always gotta be ready for a photo op;) hehehe...

Anyway, thought I'd share with you my major scores of the day! Got some goodies, AND since it was Delaware, TAX FREE! Love that.

1. Huge white vase: $12.99
I should have taken a pic of it next to a regular size vase so you can see just how big this guy is. And HEAVY. I'm talking a big ol' heavy gorgeous vase for just $12.99!!?? HomeGoods ROCKS. Can't wait to fill it with my hygdrangeas in the summer, and thinking it'll make for a perfect Thankful Tree come November.

2. Square-Holder-Thing-a-ma-jig: $9.99
Not even really sure what this is, but fell in love with it! ;) I pictured maybe some mason jars filled with flowers, or maybe plastic utensils for a party? I dunno, but I DO know I like it. Not usually an impulse buyer - if I can't think of a use for it, I pass, but this guy spoke to me..."buy me, I'm too cute to pass up"...so I did.

3. 4 Box/Drawer Thing: $6.99
I love this! And $6.99?!! I picture it sitting on a stack of large books in my future bookcases in the family room. Perhaps with a small green plant in it? Plus, my hub's got a thing for the number 4 - been his lucky lacrosse number since he was a kid and even now in his Master's leagues. So I told him I bought it "for him" and he liked that;) Win-win!

4. Wire Basket: $12.99
You know how I feel about attractive storage solutions! This will be perfect in the family room for kids' books or my magazines, or the inevitable, more TOYS. Or even in the kitchen, for cookbooks...hmmm...

5. Red and white pot: $12.99
I saw this and immediately envisioned it sitting on my open shelves in the kitchen. Perfect pop of red with the blue and white.
Dont'cha think? And it's microwavable, oven, and even dishwasher safe. Woo-hoo!

So those are my purchases from our fun outing to HomeGoods. Could very well be my favorite store (but shhh...don't tell IKEA). Do you love it too?

Ocean City 2012

Hey! Didja miss me!? (I kid, of course;). If you're a Facebook follower, you know we were on vacation last week. Went to Ocean City, Maryland, where we've been going since, well, forever. So many traditions and places we must  visit when we're down there...it always feels like home when we exit the 90 bridge and pull out onto Coastal Highway. Kids were SO excited and couldn't wait to get there!
Ok, Noah looks like he *may* not be fully awake yet, but trust me, he was pumped! ;) Literally walked out the door after they woke up!

By the way, those bags they're holding were lifesavers! The teacher in me can't get enough of stuff like this. I had a ball picking up little things at the Dollar Tree and decorating the plain white bags. The dry-erase boards turned out to be the biggest hit of all, and kept them occupied for a good hour at least. Oh, and the marker had one of those built-in erasers. Can I kiss the genius behind that  idea?!

So mental note to always make goodie bags before a long trip, worth every penny;)

We got there, hit the beach immediately (couldn't get into our place for a couple more hours), and the kids were in HEAVEN.
What a difference from last year. They've always loved the sand, but this year they were all about the water too. So fun to watch them splash in the waves and jump around with pure joy on their faces.

And of course we had to hit some rides...
Priceless.

Others we checked off the must-do list:

Funnel cakes: check.

Boardwalk: check.

(MANY) Candy Kitchen trips: check.

Dumser's (#1 MUST): check.

Kite flying: check.

Passing out from exhaustion: check.

After dinner games on the beach: check.

And Paul's personal favorite - Dressing in matching clothes for pictures on the beach: check! (100% sarcasm of course)
For the record, he always tells me after the fact, how much he loves the pictures. Yes hon, I'm calling you out;) So it's 10 minutes of his life he'll never get back, but how cute will they look blown up in our new family room, am I right?! hehehe...
And in typical fashion for our wacky bunch, we got a little crazy...
Perfect.

So we came, we swam, we played, we ate like pigs, we had a lot  of fun.  Good for the soul, good for the family, good for the memories. Thanks OC. See ya next year!

Gold Spray Paint: Aka How to Look Like a Million Bucks!

Now that Summer's pretty much over, (excuse me while I grab a tissue to wipe my tears...)

...Ok, I'm back. Whew, that was rough, sorry.

As I was saying...I finally got to a project I'd had in the back of my mind since the weather topped 70 degrees. I had an old large conch shell since, oh, forever, and I had been wanting to give it a gold makeover. Well, now that's it almost September, and the seashells and sand decor around here is about to head back into storage, I took that sucker outside and gave it its much deserved makeover.
Isn't she pretty? ;)

Here's what she looked like 5 seconds ago. (Seriously, this took about that long, and can't believe I hadn't just done this in, oh, I don't know, May!?)...
I had the shell, had the gold spray paint, so this was a freebie makeover! Love those kind! :)

Gold spray paint can COMPLETELY change the look of ANYTHING and turn it into some expensive piece of art, not something you picked up at a cheesy souvenir shop eons ago. I mean, have you seen the super talented Carmel's Gold Animal Cracker Jar Turned Lamp?!!! I mean, you MUST. Not should, MUST.  Don't know if you need much more convincing than that! ;)

So for the next, oh, week or so, I'll enjoy looking at this pretty gold shell, and next time I get it out, I'll place her on a stack of books on my new bookcases in my NEW family room...can't wait!

Speaking of the end of summer...this upcoming week will be our last week until school starts, the return of hectic mornings, homework, packing lunches, waking up early...all that jazz:(. So I'll be taking just a little hiatus from the blog next week while I savor the last of the pool days, the sand between my toes, the late nights getting snowballs, and just plain takin' it easy with my little family. Just don't want to miss a second of it, I hope you understand.
But after the week's up, get ready...one great thing about school starting again is that I get to start a-paintin'!!! Family room HERE I COME!!! :)

Happy Last Days of Summer to you and yours!

How to Make A Chalkboard from Anything...

I know, chalkboards are kind of EVERYWHERE, and you've probably got at least one around your house if you're anything like me (I won't divulge just how many I've got around this joint, for fear of Chalkboards Anonymous knocking down my door...). Chalkboard spray paint is one of my favorite things on the planet. I mean, how else could you make this:
from this:

Right??

So that old tin tray came from either a yard sale or somewhere in the depths of my parents' basement...not sure where it orginated for me, but it's been in my stash for a while, waiting for something to be done to it. I decided on a whim the other day, to grab my trusty can of chalkboard spray paint and give it a few quick coats.
Took me all of five minutes. Then I decided it needed something.  I sketched out a little curvy design in pencil (a couple days later)...
Don't worry if you make mistakes. I made quite a few. It erases pretty well, and I knew with the chalk on it, it wouldn't be noticeable.

Then I grabbed one of my zillion Sherwin Williams samples...This is actually the lightened Sea Salt, but you really can't tell with it going over the black. Looks almost white. No biggie, I didn't care, I just wanted some contrast.
After a couple coats, I primed my chalkboard. This is important for a good chalkboard. Take your chalk, and run over the whole thing so it looks like this:
Let it hang out for a little bit (I only let it sit for maybe 20 minutes, but some people swear by doing it a lot longer).

Then I decided I wanted to make it look a little aged. I got out a piece of fine sandpaper, and just roughed it up a bit to make the paint chippy. This project was a huge "whim" deal - kinda just started trying different things along the way! In hindsight, I think I would have followed the original oval rim shape of the tray instead of gettin' all fancy with the curvy business. Not a super huge fan, but it'll do;)

Think of something cute to write on it and you're done! I placed mine on a plate stand I had. Not sure where it's going to be in the house, but have it on the buffet table at the moment.
Oh my, another chalkboard. Someone needs to take the can away from me, I'm afraid.
But they're just too much fun;) You really can turn pretty much ANYTHING into a chalkboard with a can of this stuff!

Check out some of my other chalkboard projects here...and here....and here...ok I'm going to stop or we'll be here all day! ;)

A Coffee Table Switcheroo, A $5 Pillow, and Some More Ramblings...

Sorry for the long title, but thought that about sums this post up;)

I made SUCH a smart decision yesterday that I just had to share it with you...not that I'm patting myself on the back or anything. Oh who am I kidding, yes I am! :) You might remember from my New Family Room Visions post that I wanted to switch our current coffee table out with a wicker trunk that's always been in our bedroom? I bought it from Target (surprise surprise) forever ago, envisioning it at the foot of our bed. It's not all that large though, and didn't look as great as I thought it would. Point being, I never was a huge fan of it in there, so when I had the thought of moving it to the family room, I wouldn't be missing anything upstairs, know what I mean? So yesterday at naptime (or should I say "quiet time" :( Mr. 3 Year Old is putting his foot down a LOT lately on the whole nap thang. Lord help me.) I took the existing coffee table down to the laundry room for the time being, and swapped the trunk in its place.
Smartest. Move. EVER. There is SO much more room now - even the kids noticed when they were playing legos on the floor, how much more space there was to move around. Amazing how I never thought the round table was that obtrusive, but it's made such a difference. Here's a pic of the old one (Metropolitan Pottery Barn table):
Yes, it's Christmastime in this pic. Don't know why I couldn't find a better photo to show you!?

And the best part? The top opens up for, you guessed it...MORE STORAGE!! Can I get an AMEN on that?! Toys, blankets, board games, DVDS, not sure what I'll put in there, but am I psyched!
You'll notice that's the same $2 Tray I fixed up, that's about to get a BIG makeover. I'll keep you posted on that, but I'll give you a hint: the gold ain't stayin'.
See how much roomier it is to get around the couch? Maybe it's not too evident in the pics, but trust me. HUGE difference. So yay on that one...

Moving on...My $5 Pillow!!
Oh Ikea, I continue to adore you. This is just their Emmie Land pillow cover zippered around an old pillow of mine. Best 5 bucks I've ever spent! Here it is before:
Weird, for some reason it's uploading vertically? Here's a better up close shot, so you can see the shape it was in:
Nice. And the threads were all coming out, it was a show. But not anymore! Enter the Emmie Land pillow cover from Ikea...
30 seconds later...
Ta-da! Brand new pillow. LOVE it. What an improvement, and for $5?!! (Oh, and did you notice that cable knit throw there in camel? Couldn't leave that in Ikea either, had to snag it on my latest trip too;)

Some more updates...if you follow me on Facebook, you're aware that I did indeed change my mind on Misty for the paint color for the family room makeover. I know, I know, I'm a nutjob. Nothing new. It's just the next morning, the color looked sooo silvery on the wall, and I just happened to be hearing about Sherwin Williams Sea Salt here, there, and everywhere in blogland. And I've been so drawn to it, so I decided to throw the kids in the van one afternoon and head on over to SW for a sample. I had them lighten it to 75% of the formula. Did you know you could do that? If you love a color, but wish it was just a little bit lighter, or maybe a lot brighter, you can lighten it to 50%, 25%, whatever you want. I do it a lot. Colors always look SO gorgeous on the paint chip card, and I get it home, and just looks a tab bit too dark for me. Keep that in mind if that happens to you a lot too! So Sea Salt it is.
source
Seriously people. This is THE PERFECT COLOR. It's unbelievably gorgeous. And I've had it up for a good 4 days, and on sunny days or rainy days, morning, noon, and night, it is perfection. It's like a chameleon color - it's gray, it's blue, it's green. Love love love it. So as pretty as Misty is, this is the color I've been searching for this entire time. And are you ready for this? You know my inspiration pic?
The Lettered Cottage
Guess what? The color here is SW Oyster Bay, but when I looked it up, it's a super dark color (must be extremely sunny in this room, or lots of lightening in editing!?), but guess what's two colors above it on the very same paint card????  Yup. Good ol' Sea Salt. Meant to be, right!? No wonder I love it so.:)

While we're talking paint (geesh this is getting to be a wordy post - sorry!), a friend of mine gave me this tip when trying out samples: paint on poster board and tape it to the wall, that way your existing paint won't influence the color. I had always heard this tip, but never tried it. Besides, the color on my wall was a pale yellow, and Sherwin Williams is such great paint, I thought, eh, how much can it really alter it? It wasn't like I was painting over a super dark red or something. Well turns out, the existing color can alter it A LOT. The same day my friend told me this tip was the day I ran in to pick up my Sea Salt sample. While the employee was mixing it, I started chattin' it up with the workers behind the counter. I asked them about it, and they said it can completely  change the look of it. I told them I had picked out some gray blues, and put them up on my yellow wall, and they said, "Oh, I bet it looks SUPER blue, huh?" Uhhh, YES!! So the employee was so helpful and wanted to show me an experiment (thank goodness my trio was on their best behavior that day, because we were there a while;). She picked up a blue paint chip, a green paint chip, and a yellow paint chip. She placed the yellow one over both, and the yellow looked ENTIRELY different when placed on the colors! So I tried it when I got home - I placed one of the gray blues on a piece of white foam board, and held it up to the same sample on the wall.
Now here's the trick: Take your pointer finger and hold it up across the line in the middle there. Look at the top then the bottom. They look different, right?! Maybe it won't work as well in a photo, but trust me, I was BLOWN away in the examples she showed me in the store! Lesson here: always paint a sample on a WHITE surface for the truest color. I know I will! Thanks a bunch, Kelly!!

Ok, so that WAS a lot of rambling, huh? All over the place with this post - Lol! Just felt like sharing the latest on Operation Family Room with you ~

Have a fabulous weekend! :)

Chaotic House Management

After I exposed the messy truth in my post, A 'Real' Glimpse Inside the Naptime Decorator's House, one of my readers left this comment:

Again great post! So question....would you do a post on your 'Chaotic House Management'...like do you have a schedule for picking up? Do you just kill yourself every evening? Do you let it lie? My house looks a ton like yours...only enter orange 70s carpet...and while I want to just make memories...I also feel overwhelmed/frustrated by it. But I'm feeling better to know that I'm not the only one!

I thought that sounded like an excellent idea! (Thank you, Leron!) While I don't have a huge amount of tips and tricks for those of you trying to just keep your heads above the water toys, I have a few that I think (and hope!) you will find useful.

So without further adieu, here are the ways I keep my house and  my sanity. Take it for what you will;)

1. I start my day on the right foot.
A lot of people have something that when they do it first thing, it sets the precedence for their entire day. Before I had kids, this would have been working out (HA! Imagine that. Haven't set foot in a gym in 6 years now, but in my former life, I actually chose  to wake up at 5am! How times have changed...). For some people it might be making their bed. For me, if I don't empty the dishwasher first thing, my day's shot. Ok, I'm not THAT bad! But it's one thing that makes it easier for me to keep up with my day. Dishes are constantly piling up in the kitchen every day, and when I have a nice empty dishwasher, the breakfast dishes pop right in, then the snack dishes, then the lunch dishes, and so on. If I keep up with the dishes and see an empty sink, I have some sense of control around here. And there's nothing worse than starting to make dinner and seeing the ENTIRE day's worth of dishes staring at you. But that's just me. Find your 'thing' and do  it.

2. I stay afloat with the room that is the most crucial for me.
I added this next, because it kind of ties in with #1. The kitchen is Grand Central Station in our home. Once that room's chaotic, feel chaotic. But if I can keep that room under control throughout the day, I'm good. I'm a clean cook - I wash the pots and dishes as I make meals. I like that putting the dinner dishes in the dishwasher and storing the leftovers is the only thing facing me when the meal is over. As long as I can stay afloat with dishes, piles, etc., in the kitchen, I don't get overwhelmed. On the opposite end of the spectrum, our playroom in the basement? ALWAYS a disaster. But I don't need to prepare meals amidst all of that, or make important phone calls, or organize the family calendar. So you know what? I'm fine with the mess down there;) Gotta pick your battles, right?

3. I don't fold laundry.
GASP! It's out there. My big secret! ;) Ok, it's not completely true, but I do more of a "put away neatly" method. Here's how I handle laundry (by the way, Dear God, where oh where does it come from?!!). I do at least a load every 2 days. I prefer the frequent method as opposed to piling it up throughout the week and spending hours on the weekend doing it. But that's just me. And here's how I fold it: when we're all upstairs, and the kids are playing, I make piles on my bedroom floor. One pile for each kid, and when I come across something of mine or my husband's, I put it away (either in drawers or hung up in the closet). So then I'm left with 3 piles. I don't even turn things that are inside out. I just quick make piles and deal with it when I get to their rooms:
the piles are MUCH bigger than this, trust me!
Then I go into one of their rooms to deliver it, or call them to grab them. I hand them the items they can do (underwear, pjs, bathing suits - things that I don't care if they're stuffed in a drawer in a ball!). Then I handle the rest. Two of the kids have very small rooms, so I don't have dressers in there. Instead, I use the closet - Noah's room has his changing table in there, basically because the bins we had used were so large! (Note: this system won't really work when they grow up and their clothes get bigger, but while they're so small, the bins work fine:) I hang ALL of his shirts- even t-shirts - and the pants, shorts, pajamas, etc. all go in the bins.
See what I mean about the no-folding thing? I just kinda lay them in there. My kids have an obsession with picking out clothes, so they're in and out all day anyway, grabbing things. If I folded, it would be a huge waste of time around here;)

Reagan's closet has one of those plastic storage guys in there:
Again, I hang all her shirts (and dresses), and everything else is in the plastic drawers. If I had a penny for every time this girl was in and out of those drawers...I'd be a millionaire by now! And she's not the *neatest* child, so she's always stuffing things here, there, and everywhere. But if it's put away, I'm cool.
4. Take advantage of times when you can multitask.
I don't mean all the time. I'm the biggest supporter of getting down on the floor and playing with your kids, putting on puppet shows, and building forts...but sometimes you can let them be while you get some stuff done. For example, I clean the bathroom while they take a bath. All 3 of mine still take a bath together, and they're all at ages when I don't have to hold onto them or be a nervous wreck that they'll fall. (Plus, we have a small tub, they couldn't really go anywhere if they tried!). So while they're splish-splashing and playing mermaids and superheros, I grab my GreenWorks botttle and get to work. I can have the sink, toilet, and floor spotless before they get shampooed;) And the green stuff doesn't have fumes or dangerous chemicals, so they're safe.

And times when I get to steal a few minutes to talk to a friend on the phone? I'm always doing something. I've never been able to sit on a couch and talk on the phone. (If you knew me in person, this would not be surprising information;). So while I'm chatting away, I'm often cleaning the kitchen floor, or wiping off furniture.

5. Baskets, baskets, oh, and more baskets.
Can't say enough about attractive storage. We would look like a Toys 'R' Us if we didn't have them. When we had one kid, I was very particular about organizing things in certain bins, baskets, containers. Blocks went in the Blocks bin. Dolls went in the Dolls bin. You get the jist. Then we had #2 and #3, and I just could.not.keep.up. So huge baskets are our favorite things for stashing anything and everything.
Got this at Target about a year ago, but it's still there, in case you want to grab one for yourself:) It usually looks more like this:
But hey, if I'm able to get the kids to actually clean up after themselves, I'd mark it in the 'Win' column, wouldn't you?

Here's another, just for books (yes, that is the one thing we make sure doesn't get mixed in with the other toys)
Got that at Target about a year ago as well. (In the bath section for curious minds:).

Baskets are a great way to get my kids to clean up their stuff, and keep our family room from looking like this joint is completely  run by kids (which of course, we know it is;).

6. We do our big pick up before bedtime.
So I told you I keep tabs on the kitchen throughout the day. I also said the playroom in the basement pretty much stays destroyed (with the exception of when I hold our Monthly Girls Craft Night and Sundays during football season;). The other room that gets used the most during the day would be the family room. From about 7am to 7pm, you would see 80 billion lego pieces strewn around the room, a random tiara and Batman mask (among many other things) on the coffee table, perhaps a pile of crayons and paper on the floor. And it's ok with me to have it a mess all day. It used to bug the heck out of me to see everything everywhere throughout the day, but it doesn't really phase me anymore. And I know if any company pops over, if they have children, they totally  get it. If anything, they probably would feel better, knowing my house isn't "company ready" the majority of the time! But once 7pm hits, we get that room in shape. That's the room Paul and I usually spend our evenings curled up watching tv and hanging out. And I just cannot deal when it's in complete disarray at that precious time of day. Those few hours after the kids go down and we head up to bed are OUR time, and as much as I madly love my children, I can't decompress when I'm stepping on legos (um, OUCH!) or throwing Cinderella and Rapunzel dresses around to find my magazine or remote control. So right before we head up to begin the whole teeth-brushing-book-reading-song-singing routine, we ALL tidy up the family room, so when Paul and I walk downstairs after tucking those munchkins in, we see a nice straight room to relax in. Plus, it's important to us to get the kids involved in cleaning up their things.

So there's a few of the ways I keep house around this joint. Do I abide by these all the time? Absolutely not.  But I don't beat myself up if I slip. If there's anything I've learned about parenthood, it's that each and EVERY day is a brand new one. One day, the messes overwhelm me and I feel so buried in all of it, and the next, I could feel refreshed, and embrace it all, because I know it's not going to last forever. I'm happy that those days are occurring more often, as I'm becoming more and more aware at how fast theses babies grow. I know one day I'll walk into my family room and won't see this sight:
And I can't believe it, but I think I might just cry when that day comes.

In the meantime, I will think of these words as I walk in every less-than-perfect room and know they are as true as the day is long:

"Please excuse the mess, the children are making memories."

And how blessed am I to be surrounded by their messes.
